Spyglass Board Games Achievement Guide

Difficulty Index:

Having said all that, it is certainly possible for anyone to get 200/200 in this game, particularly if you have a boosting partner to help you. In fact, with a boosting parter, most of the achievements are trivial. On to the tips:

  1. Player of Games (5 points, easy) - Play all four game types at least once each. Pretty self-explanatory, just complete one game of Chess, Checkers, Reversi, and Mancala.
  2. AI? Yeah, Right! (20 points, medium) - Beat the AI at all four games. This one is the first of the slightly glitched achievements. Sometimes you have to beat the AI in each game more than once. I had to win at Reversi twice before it unlocked for me. For Chess, there is a trivial way to beat the computer every time, just follow the following move sequence:

Thanks to LastFog for the tip!

Reversi is actually probably the hardest of the bunch, but one way to do it if you can beat the computer yourself is to go to the website located at:

There's a version of Reversi you can play there. What you can do is go to this site, have the computer start first. Then just copy the computers moves in the website version in a 360 game, and do the 360 AI's moves on the web version. Since the AI on the website is so much better, you'll win just about every time (the one time I tried this, I also got a piece in all four corners as well).

There's no other (or at least none that I am aware of) trick for doing the other two games.

  3. Game Swap (5 points, easy with partner) - Playing online, play at least one game of all four game types in the same session. Only one trick to this one: you must play one complete game of each of the four game types in one session in a online player match. If you have a friend with the game, this is trivial. If you don't, start posting messages in the various achievement sites' forums (for example, http://www.achieve360points.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51034 is a good one).
  4. Chess Champ (25 points, hard) - Play online and win 10 Chess games. This can be done in either ranked or player matches, so again if you have a buddy, this one's trivial. If you don't have a buddy, it can be hard depending on how good you are at chess, as there are some very good players on XBL (of course, there are also some very bad players as well). One thing to note: if an opponent in a chess game quits before it's over, it counts as a win for you on the leaderboards, BUT DOES NOT COUNT FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future patch, as unfortunately a lot of people will quit when they know they're going to lose.
  5. Five Kings (10 points, medium) - Play Checkers and in any game get five Kings. Self-explanatory. I don't know if you can get this in an online game, I got it against the computer. No real trick to this, just play well, or get a buddy.
  6. Mancala Master (20 points, medium) - Win a game of Mancala with 27 pieces or more. Note that you can get this one in an online game with a buddy, as I did it in a player match. You just have to win with 27 points.
  7. King Me! (10 points, easy) - Get a king in Checkers. If you don't know how to get a king in Checkers, do a Google search for "Checkers" and learn to play. :p
  8. Mancala Warrior (20 points, easy) - Play online with a friend and win 2 Mancala games as white and 2 as black. This one has to be done online. It also has to be player match, as you have to play all four games in one session with the same person. To switch sides, go into Help & Options and pick "Switch Sides".
  9. Four Corners (30 points, hard) - Capture all four corners in any game of Reversi. I couldn't do this myself playing against the computer, but did do it with the tip outlined in the "AI? Yeah Right!" achievement. It can also be done online with a buddy in a player match. So again, if you have a friend, this is trivial.
  10. Winner Of Games (30 points, hard) - Win a ranked match in all four game types. In a way, this can be the hardest achievement. No trick to it, just win one ranked match (no player matches) of each game type.
  11. Overkill (20 points, medium) - Win at Chess while taking every one of your opponent's pieces except for the King. This can be done online with a buddy in a player match or against the CPU. It's definitely doable against the CPU (that was how I got it) particularly if you're good at Chess.
  12. Play 5 (5 points, easy or impossible) - Play online for 5 games. This one is the seemingly famous achievement which appears to be glitched for some people (including myself). Reports seem to indicate that it's just a matter of playing 5 games online (ranked or player match), but I've played well over 20 matches online and it hasn't unlocked for me. One would think that if you have the Chess Champ achievement, then you should have the Play 5 achievement, as you have to play at least 10 games of Chess to get Chess Champ, but there are a number of people out there with 195/200 for this game. Again, hopefully this will be fixed in an update for the game.

Update: It is now Dec 13, 2007, and this still has not yet been fixed. Reports on the xbox.com forums state that a fix is in the works, but has been for several months now. This was posted by Aaron Fothergill a developer for Strage Flavour on the xbox.com forums:

"For most of the multiplayer achievements, I'd recommend playing against friends who you know won't quit out on you until you've got the achievements. Also pause to look at the game results for a few seconds at least after each game. It won't solve the issue for some of you who've played lots of games above the check points, but it'll help a bit for some of them. (Note: We're aiming for the fix to spot and re-issue the achievement if possible or at least let you try for it again)."

As well, Aaron also gives this piece of advice to avoid having Play 5 glitch on you (unfortunately this only applies to those who don't already have the other achievements):

"tip. don't quit early from your 5th online game if you want the Play 5 achievement"

I am not aware of any confirmation of the connection between quitting your 5th match and glitching Play 5 however, but obviously it wouldn't hurt to avoid doing so.

It has been rumoured that Aaron is the only person at Strange Flavour working on the fix, and he is doing so in his spare time. As such, it would appear that a fix for the problem is very unlikely.
